Hunting the Heartland

Great Bend's central location in the state as well as its enviable position along the Central Flyway makes it the ideal home base for both upland game and waterfowl hunting. Within one hour of Great Bend you’ll find over 58,000 acres of public hunting areas, including Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Click here to view the hunting site list.

In addition to thousands of acres of public land, the Walk-In Hunting Area (WIHA) program, developed by Kansas Wildlife and Parks, partners with area landowners to allow hunting on approximately 4,500 acres of private land in Barton and surrounding counties. To get a copy of the WIHA publication, call Kansas Parks & Wildlife at 620-672-5911 or visit their Web site.

Interested in fishing? You’ll find lakes to fish in here in Great Bend, and within an hour’s drive of the here, you can enjoy fishing at Wilson or Kanopolis lakes. You’re also welcome to fish at Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge – please consult refuge managers for regulations.
